Chapter Resource Center

Open Screen Night

Contributed by: South Florida

Description of program: This is an informal gathering at a local bar or cafe. We use Lunas... a funky place on an off-night. We negotiate for a special on beverages; the chapter guarantees $300 in drinks. We offer each member 2 drink tickets with open bar after. Food is ordered from the menu, or there's a special discount dinner on a plat du jour.

Each member brings in a CD or flash drive of 5-10 of their favorite images or project to show on screen, and gives a little talk about it.

We have had 3 Open Screen Nights in the last year... very popular. We encourage students and emerging professionals to show and get to know each other.

How many people were needed to produce the meeting, and what were their tasks?
We always involve all of the board to work meetings. But the minimum is 3: one for the projector, one to check in and hand out tickets, and one (usually the president) to run things.

Describe the type of location needed for the meeting.
Any cafe or bar where you don't have to set anything up... helps the establishment as well as us.

Break down the costs associated with putting on this type of meeting.
Around $300-400

Describe the attendance and the fee structure used for this meeting.
40 or so. No fee.

What was done to market or publicize the meeting?
Email blasts to members and phone tree.

Was this a public meeting or a chapter only meeting?
Chapter with guests.

Is there anything else we should know about this meeting and why it was so successful?
It gave newbies a chance to expose themselves and feel part of the chapter. It got us out of "what I do to earn a living" and into "why I love what I do."
