Speed Mentoring

Description of program: We hosted a speed mentoring event based on the idea of speed dating. All the attending photographers were qualified by the fact that they were either looking for assistants and/or interns for their businesses. The photographers were seated at tables they occupied throughout the evening while assistants/interns would go around and visit with each photog for a 5 minute period. We used it to discuss strengths, goals, and compatibility. It was not a time to show portfolios but rather a time to get to know one another. There was then a social time afterwards for photogs to connect further with those they found interesting.

 

How many people were needed to produce the meeting, and what were their tasks?
3 organizers: One kept time and rang a bell at the end, one entertained and answered questions from assistants and/or interns that were not currently meeting with photogs, and the third person moved from table to table making sure that people were going where they were supposed to and facilitating.

 

Describe the type of location needed for the meeting.
Large studio or open event area where table could be set up and people could move about.

 

Break down the costs associated with putting on this type of meeting.
The only cost we had was for table/chair rental and refreshments.

 

Describe the attendance and the fee structure used for this meeting.
We had 17 photogs attend and more than 25 assistants or interns. We charged student, assistant and intern members $5 to attend and charged the member photogs looking for people $10. Non-members paid $5 more respectively

 

What was done to market or publicize the meeting?
We use only email and web marketing for our events. It was sent to school instructors and members announced it to students and assistants they knew

Is there anything else we should know about this meeting and why it was so successful?
The idea was to introduce people to one another and allow them to get to know one another without each assistants/intern calling every studio or photog to meet with to see about work.
